Sunday Stealing: The Meme from Suburbia (ZJ's post)

Today we ripped off a blogger named Another Suburban Mom from the blog Another Suburban Mom. It is 20 questions, She says she got it from Dana. But, it was probably stolen there as well. So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft's thieves might take some time. Take the time to comment on other player's posts. It's a great way to make new friends! Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Sunday Stealing: The Meme From Suburbia

1. What were you doing 10 years ago?
Ten years ago I was a very active advocate of environmental conservation in a country not mine. Those was the time I began travelling around Cambodia and several countries in Asia, talking about state of Cambodia's environment and what my organisation is doing to address this issue.

 2. By this time next year, I ...
... would already have an ankle-biter in tow and go on playdates.

3. Do you think the United States will elect a female President in your lifetime? Do you think this would be a good thing?
I'm not sure about answering this one because I am not an American, but from where I am from, I have seen two female presidents already. Although I cannot really say much about their performances while they were in position, I can say that it is good for the women's movement.

4. Which fictional, TV show character you would shag anytime?
Who's that sexy guy in the American TV series Spartacus? Manu Bennett?Oh yeah.

5. Who is your greatest enemy?
I, Me, and Myself.

6. Tell me about your most recent trip of more than 100 miles?
We left very early in the morning, around 5.30am, and I was still half-awake. Naturally, I slept the whole time till we reached our destination, waking up only during the scheduled bus stops to go to the loo.

7. Which do you use more often, the dictionary or the thesaurus?
I use both when doing my reports.

 8. Do you have a nickname? What is it?
The Sarge. I don't know why but perhaps my colleagues think I always want to be in charge.

9. What are you dreading at the moment?
That Andy Murray is going to lose this finals match to Novak Djokovic in five sets. Can you tell that I'm watching tennis now? It's the men's finals at the Australian Open, as I write this.

10. Do you worry that others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
I don't let other people tell me what I should and should not do. In the same vein that I don't let what they think of me hinder me from doing what I want to do. I like answering memes and the I don't care if they don't like what I write here.

11. If you find an outfit you love, but the size on the label is larger than you want, do you buy the outfit? Why or why not?
Of course not. Would you? I mean, it won't make sense at all. Just find another style that has your size and go buy it.

12. Even the biggest slackers are anal-retentive about something? What are you anal-retentive about?
I tend to have rituals before doing something.  I have a system for doing things inside the house or at the office and don't want anyone to do it or mess with it unless I'm away.

13. Out of all the books you read as a child, which one had the biggest influence on how you are today?
The Arabian Nights. I was fascinated with tales of the genies and traders and travelling to far-off, unimaginable places.

 14. Which Golden Girl would you want to spend a night on the town with?
Hmmmm. Maybe the feisty Estelle Getty.

15. What is the one product you would never buy in its generic form even if the generic is half the price?
Food products is all I can think of.

16. How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa?
Old enough. Maybe 9-10yo.

 17. What is the one smell that turns your stomach without fail?
The smell of something rotten and body odour, of course.

18. If someone holds out a carton of milk to you and asks you to sniff it to see if its spoiled, do you?
Yes, I do, without a second thought.

19. You have a completely free day and $2000.00, What are you doing?
That's a lot of cash to spend in one day and I'm tempted to splurge. But I made a pledge to minimise spending and live contentedly with less. I'll probably dine out with my husband, watch a movie together, and keep the rest for the rainy days.

20. What is the most used item in your home?
I think it's the computer. My husband and I have one each.

Saturday 9: Stormy Weather (ZJ's post)

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Stormy Weather

1) Do noisy storms scare you?
Yes, all the time. The last time I experienced a very strong storm (or typhoon in the Philippines) was in the year '95-'96 (can't remember exactly) and I can still remember the sound of the heavy downpouring rain and the howling wind that blew some of our neighbours' houses and toppled huge trees in our street.

 2) Mother Winters tells us Lena Horne was considered one of the great beauties of the 1940s. Whom do you consider one of today's most beautiful women?
I don't know how do you define "beautiful" so I cannot answer that directly. I have no idea as to what exactly is the formula to being beautiful. Is it the physical features,  the personality and character, or the values and principles that they believe in?

3) Crazy Sam admits it -- there's a big bag of recycling she really should take out to the bin. Yet she's composing this meme. What should you be doing, instead of answering her questions?
I should be out there partying the night. But I caught this stupid stomach virus so I'm done for the night.

4) Sam may be crazy, but she's not stupid and will never waste her money on Cialis, no matter how many unsolicited emails she receives! What's the most recent addition to your spam folder?
The most recent one I deleted is from a Canadian pharmacy offering a huge discount on slimming pills. I wonder if the spammer knows me personally, hahaha.

5) What was the last thing you cooked?
I cooked eggs and made toast for breakfast.

6) Do you remember the lyrics to your either your high school or college fight song? If so, please share a bit.
No idea what a fight song is.

 7) "Samantha" is the feminine of "Samuel" and means "Listener." What's the derivation of your first name?
Well, I tried to look it up but ended up with confusing info. One site says the origin of my name is Hebrew, while another says it's English. The meaning also varies, but refer to God - God is gracious  (Hebrew), or, God's gracious gift (English). There, feel free to choose.

8) Are you following the NBA or NHL this year? If so, which team are you rooting for?
Not much for NBA and NHL. I'm more of ATP and WTA follower (tennis).

9) Gloves, umbrellas, sunglasses, keys -- which of these do you misplace most often?
Keys and eyeglasses definitely! I have this knack for misplacing a lot of my stuff.

SATURDAY 9: STORMY WEATHER

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

1) Do noisy storms scare you? No, I actually find it soothing. Some storms are meant to be noisy.

2) Mother Winters tells us Lena Horne was considered one of the great beauties of the 1940s. Whom do you consider one of today's most beautiful women? I consider my own mom as one of today's most beautiful women. Her inner beauty shines from within.

3) Crazy Sam admits it -- there's a big bag of recycling she really should take out to the bin. Yet she's composing this meme. What should you be doing, instead of answering her questions? I recycle as I go so there is really no problem in multi-tasking. I try to find time to do everything and anything, especially if it is as important as recycling and answering this meme.

4) Sam may be crazy, but she's not stupid and will never waste her money on Cialis, no matter how many unsolicited emails she receives! What's the most recent addition to your spam folder? A mail from a ladies penpal site.

5) What was the last thing you cooked? I cooked CHICKEN BINAKOL for lunch today. It is a Filipino recipe for a soup that has chicken meat, young coconut and other spices.

6) Do you remember the lyrics to your either your high school or college fight song? If so, please share a bit. I'm sorry, I cannot really recall any fight songs from either my high school or college years.

7) "Samantha" is the feminine of "Samuel" and means "Listener." What's the derivation of your first name? My first name is Samantah, close to Samantha. I guess my first name also means "Listener".

8) Are you following the NBA or NHL this year? If so, which team are you rooting for? Yes, I try to watch the NBA if I get the time and I'm always rooting for the Houston Rockets.

9) Gloves , umbrellas, sunglasses, keys -- which of these do you misplace most often? None. I don't use gloves. I seldom use an umbrella. I have a pouch for my sunglasses and I place my keys either by the door or inside my handbag.

CHICKEN BINAKOL...FOR THE SOUL

Dear ZJ,

How about some CHICKEN BINAKOL for lunch?

I was able to cook this hearty soup dish for lunch today, January 26, 2013. It was relatively easy to make. All it took was to simmer together some chicken meat, sliced young coconut meat or buko, coconut water or buko juice, whole peppercorns, onion, garlic, ginger, lemongrass or tanglad, tomatoes, finger chillies, chilli tops (or sili leaves) and a broth cube. I was able to find a recipe online for this dish. The recipe called for sauteing but I forego this method so as not to add more oil to the dish. I was not able to find kamias so I used tomatoes instead.

It was fun to watch and wait for this soup to cook. It took me about twenty minutes to prepare and about an hour to cook. Mom enjoyed sipping the warm soup. She also found it very flavorful, aromatic and very filling. She even said that I should cook it again.

It was like chicken tinola but with a twist since young coconut was added to it. By the way, the young coconut was brought this morning from an ambulant buko vendor for twenty pesos a piece. This version of the chicken binakol needed 2 buko. The rest of the ingredients were readily available from our ref. The lemongrass was from a neighbor's front yard and the chilli tops were picked from our garden. Mom cooked buttered fried rice to match the soup. It's always nice to have some hot soup once in a while.

I hope that you are having a happy weekend! Take care, always. Hear from you again real soon.

Sincerely,
Samantah

LOSING IT!...on a midweek

Dear ZJ,

Hoping all is well with you out there.

Over here, I have a fever and a very bad headache. Because of this, I haven't gone to work for two days. As I was drinking iced tea, it suddenly dawned on me that I need to post another entry for LOSING IT!

So, here goes my five-day food diary dated January 19 to January 23, 2013. January 19: brunch was champorado and dinner was nilagang baboy and a cup of rice. January 20: brunch was an egg sandwich while dinner was chicken, rice and a ripe banana. January 21, breakfast was bread and a cup of coffee. Lunch was ginataang puso ng saging and a cup of rice. Dinner was bread, macaroni soup and fresh vegetable salad. By January 22, I had a brunch of champorado and dinner was sardines and rice. Today, January 23, breakfast was the usual bread and a cup of coffee. Lunch was ginisang ampalaya and rice. While dinner (which was served quite early than usual) was steamed siopao and milk. Since I haven't been feeling well for the past two days, I upped my usual water intake and added more fruits (mostly oranges and grapes) to my daily intake. I also sipped on iced tea for refreshment. Although I must confess that I have also increased my coffee intake to 3 mugs a day. I cannot live without the much-sought after coffee buzz.

I think I'm still in a paracetamol-induced state of mind while writing this. Kindly excuse incoherence, if there is any.

BTW, it was nice to read your post once again. Thanks and just keep your posts coming!

These will be for now.

Monday Mellow Yellows: Blooming

I feel awful for not blogging last week. I think the raging hormones got hold of me and kept me from doing what I was supposed to be doing last week.

Anyways, I heard from the grapevine that the hosting of Mellow Yellow Monday meme has changed hands. It is now known as the Monday Mellow Yellows hosted by Gemma. I want to take this opportunity to join this weekly photo meme from now on as I could not keep up with the other memes. Perhaps my partner-in-crime, Sam, will take care of the other memes while I take charge of those relating to photos? Whatchathink, Sam? :D

Anyways, here's our first entry:

A tiny ampalaya (bitter gourd) on its infancy stage.
Some two years ago, I met my Thai friend and over dinner we talked about her buying a small piece of land in her hometown in rural Thailand. Now, two years later, a traditional Thai house is already built and not only that, she is growing her own food. She has a nice vegetable garden and keeps several ducks and chickens. I think that's one of the reasons why I got into gardening. Since December last year, I have already picked nearly a dozen ampalayas from this plant, and yet, a lot more flowers are blooming.

Still...LOSING IT!

Hello ZJ,

This is another shoutout from my place to yours, with the hopes that you are having a happy Friday night.

We had a whole day meeting at the office earlier today. Details on Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) and planning were tackled - new information that I have no knowledge about, really. I was in-charge of taking down the minutes of the said meeting . According to our CBR head, I did a good job eventhough it was my first time to be involved in NGO work. Eventhough I was a silent participant in the said meeting, I'm hoping that I will be able to handle all the tasks they gave me.

So much for that. In today's entry for Losing It!, let me enumerate what I have eaten for the whole day. For breakfast, I had 2 slices of bread and a cup of instant coffee (again with creamy vanilla creamer). For midday snacks, it was a 1 Jollibee yumburger (plain, without cheese) and a glass of soft drinks, Sprite. For lunch, I had veggies and a cup of rice. Baduya (or fried ripe bananas in batter) and instant coffee (3-in-1 original mix) was my mid-afternoon merienda. And for dinner, I had 2 slices of bread and 2 pieces of 555 sardines (hot variant). I also munched on a pack of cheese balls tonight. Obviously, I have eaten more than my usual intake for today, lol.

Well, we have survived 5 days of Losing It! and I am proud to say that the journey to mindful eating is all set for us. All it really takes is the right mindset and the proper attitude. Plus taking the extra time to post entries on a regular basis which I hope to do. If not, there is always the option for updates, right? Like you, I am also looking forward to losing the excess pounds that have accumulated over time.

These will be for now. Have a nice weekday evening! Take care, always.

Sincerely,
Samantah

Thursday Thoughts...on Losing It!

Dear Zarah,

Warm greetings from the Philippines!

I am now working at HELP Learning Center as assistant to the mediator. I started last Monday (Jan 14, 2013). My job includes: filing documents for clients (special cases with disabilities), updating old documents, reminding the mediator of things that need to be done, encoding and working hand-in-hand with the mediator and junior mediators of this institution. I get supervision from a PWD (he is using a wheelchair) and one other person who works here, too. The work is really masakit lang sa likod. And I get to use a laptop for documentation purposes. The fact that HELP has wifi is always a good thing.

My post for Losing It! will include all the foods that I have eaten last Tuesday (Jan 15), Wednesday (Jan 16) and today (Jan 17). So here goes my list: Tuesday: breakfast was 2 slices of bread and coffee (instant with creamy vanilla creamer), lunch was a cup of rice with viands of lumpiang shanghai and ginisang mungo; dinner was a serving of macaroni with gourmet sauce. Wednesday: I had the usual bread slices (2) and coffee. Lunch was a cup of rice and kandinga or bopis. Dinner was a Jollibee delivery of crispy pork steak and rice. Today, January 17, I had spaghetti for breakfast, with a cup of coffee. Lunch was a cup of rice with pinakbet. During the past 3 days, my snacks included: a serving of pansit and siopao (Jan 15), a slice of butter cake (Jan 16) and for today, Jan 17, I did not have my usual snacks. For dinner tonight, I shared a cup of java rice with mom, had a slice of barbeque and some macaroni salad. Plus a small serving of double dutch ice cream for dessert.

I am hoping that this series on purposeful consumption of food will be for the long haul.

I am also trying to limit my intake of soft drinks and other carbonated juices. Although I can’t seem to stay away from instant coffee for the usual perk-me-up in the mornings and the much-sought-after buzz at night, Much as I love coffee, I am trying to stay within the limits of 2 cups per day.

So, these will be for now. Catch you online tonight! Take care, always.

Sincerely,
Samantah

Losing It: Day one

Dear Sam,

I was away last Monday because of my former colleague who's visiting town (the one I told you about) asked me again to go out for lunch. Since it's her last day in Phnom Penh (and we already went out on the night she arrived), I obliged because it was her birthday and all. However, I didn't think that the lunch date would end up at 10pm! Of course, the husband wasn't too happy (who would be?).

I feel you.
Photo via GoogleImages
So you already started Losing It, eh? Hahaha. I really like our mantra, Sam.

I'm embarrassed to say that I pigged out yesterday, from Chinese food to Khmer street food. Talking about struggling to stay away from unhealthy food and yet somehow have a way of finding me and ending up on my plate. What a day.

Anyway, I'm also keeping a note of my weight for future reference but it's off the record only, hahhaha. The figures are very embarrassing.

Let's get started, shall we? Here's a rundown of my meals today?

For breakfast, I only had a cup of coffee with condensed milk. Local Cambodian coffee (from the northern province of Stoeung Treng) is not the same without the milk. It has to have milk. Pano na lang ang diet? Solution? Slowly wean myself off condensed milk. And everything sweet. I'm making it a goal to be off sweets  by the end of the first half of the year.

For lunch, I had about a cup of rice and a bowl of pork stew (something similar to menudo) and lots of water.

We had dinner late, as usual. Still guilty about Monday's pigging out, I made a decision to eat only a plateful of garden salad which I made myself. Lettuce, local tomatoes, cucumber, and my favourite home-made creamy-ginger-soy dressing. I was almost congratulating myself for staying away from rice when ... I reached out for a can of Pepsi in the fridge, hahaha.
Well, at least I tried.

Tomorrow is another adventure in mindful eating while keeping in mind our mantra.

May the force be with us and keep us steadfast in our commitment to lose weight and be healthy  :)

Cheerios,

ZJ

Happy Thoughts...on Losing It!

Dear Zarah,

Thanks for the great time online. I really do appreciate the fact that I get the chance to chat with you on YM. As we begin yet another journey in our long distance life, let me just say that I am really happy to have you as my dear friend. We have been friends for so long now and I am praying that this friendship will last for more years to come. Regardless of our time differences, we are able to keep in touch and have maintained real ties that bind. I am always thankful for all the new things that I learn from you and I am looking forward to learning more from you. Whether it may be new and time-tested recipes, tutorials on weblogging, ways to stay inspired and all the other factoids of life that we share with each other time and again. Although I really miss taking to you face-to-face, the online chats that we have surely make up for the long distance between us. Once again, thanks!

As we start another chapter to our quest for a healthier lifestyle, we will start a series you have aptly  labelled as "Losing It!". From our points-of-view, and as how I understand it, we will be posting the food we eat. It's like writing a food journal. The end-result, of course, and in due time is to be able to make wiser food choices and lose the extra weight that have appeared out of nowhere! From my side, I am hoping that I will be able to lose these excess kilos by really being meticulous of what I eat each day and try to post it here as often as I can. Given time and with enough discipline, the goal of reaching a decent weight will be a possibility.

So, here's my food log for today, January 14, 2013: for breakfast: I ate 2 small pieces of pan de sal (without any butter) and drank a cup of coffee. For lunch: I ate a cup of rice and kinunot. For dinner: I ate 2 slices of bread and vegetable salad (minus the dressing) plus some fresh watermelon. I also had a small pack of crackers for my snacks this afternoon. I don't have any idea as to what is the calorie content of the foods that I have consumed today. It's all based on my gut feel that I have eaten less today as I have avoided mindless grazing by drinking lots of water all throughout this day.

Well, these will be for now. I hope to be able to read your updates too. I am sorry I cannot really post any pictures because my digicam has stopped functioning properly for some time now. Thanks for taking the time out to read this post. Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
Samantah

Today we ripped off a blogger named Gina from the blog The Journey to Olivia. It is 40 questions, this is part two. She does not state where she found the meme. But, it was probably stolen there as well. So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft's thieves might take some time. Take the time to comment on other player's posts. It's a great way to make new friends! Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Saturday 9: We Owned the Night

Hello there. This is our first time here at Saturday 9. We are actually two bloggers, namely Samantah and ZJ (and this is my post). We are posting and linking our posts separately so watch out for Samantah's later. So I guess I'll just jump right away into answering the meme :)

Saturday 9: We Owned the Night

 1) Can you recall a time when you danced and romanced like you "owned the night?"
Yes, I remember it clearly. I was at a friend's wedding and I was a little bit on the tipsy side having drank two glasses of wine, lol.

 2) Samantha Winters admits she earned the name "Crazy Sam" during her party girl days in the 1980s. But now she's in bed by 11:00 PM. Do you have a regular bedtime?
No, bedtime sked changes depending on many factors like if I'm busy with work or watching a good movie. Could be earlier or later than 11pm really.

 3) Lady Antebellum is one of the most popular acts in country music. Do you often listen to country music?
Not really a fan of country music, but I had heard of their songs played over the radio and they're not bad either.

 4) Are you responding to this meme on a desktop or laptop or phone or tablet?
From my ever-dependable laptop.

 5) How often do you check your horoscope?
When I'm in the mood, yes, I check my horoscope.

 6) Congratulations! You just won a trip to Switzerland! Is your passport up to date?
My passport is due to expire next year but if the trip to Switzerland is soon then it's still valid for travel :)

 7) Do you know how to snow ski?
Nope. It's one thing I want to learn if ever I set foot to wintry countries.

 8) What's the first beverage you drink in the morning?
Usually it's coffee but we ran out of milk so I just had a swig of OJ before heading out to the grocery shop.

9) Are you a good speller?
You bet I am! Lol.

Pretty in pink! lol.

I love them. Yeah, what's up, doc?

You mean now while I'm typing this? Absolutely. I'm looking at the clock on my PC. It reads 3:51PM (Phnom Penh time).
